Seven students at Waynesboro Area Senior High School have been awarded scholarships by Waynesboro College Club. The winners were announced at the club’s 89th banquet May 15 in Waynesboro Country Club.
One objective of the club is to encourage interest in obtaining a college education among high school students. This year, the club awarded $25,000 to the recipients, the most money ever awarded in a year.
The three students who were awarded $5,000 scholarships are:
Gracie French will attend Juniata College to major in environmental science or animal sciences. Gracie, daughter of Crystal Fridinger and Jeremy French, is the student council president and a member of the art club, French club, and class of 2024 executive council. She has been a member of the varsity soccer, track and basketball teams, and is an intern at Buttonwood Nature Center – Home of The Institute.
Alexa Levick, daughter of Jason and Michele Levick, will attend Mount St. Mary’s University to major in communications. An intern at Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc., Alexa is a member of the class of 2024 executive council, historian of the Junior Civitan Club, and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Brenner Mcllquham will attend Mount St. Mary’s University to major in history and pre-law. He is the captain of the varsity swim team and a member of the class of 2024 executive council. The son of Sharon and Eric Mcllquham, he is a member of Quiz Bowl, the Brain Buster’s team, math league and National History Bee. Brenner is co-host of All Things Sports, a weekly radio talk show.
These students were awarded $2,500 scholarships:
Emma Coulter will attend Princeton University to major in physics and dance. The daughter of Laura Biesecker and Craig Coulter, she is president of French Club and Envirothon, historian of the class executive council, captain of the Brain Busters Team, and a member of the chamber choir and treble choir. She also dances with the City Ballet School in Hagerstown.
Sophie Shatzer will attend Wilson College to major in veterinary nursing. The daughter of Heather and Shawn Shatzer, she is a member of the Junior Civitan Club and student council executive council. Sophie has been a dancer for 13 years and works at Waynesboro Veterinary Hospital.
Maddy Stoops, daughter of Erin and Trayer Stoops, will attend Shippensburg University to major in middle level (grades 4-8) science education. She is the drum major and a member of the band, choir and German Club. Maddy is captain of the swim team, and a member of the volleyball and track teams. She has worked at the concession stand and as a lifeguard at Northside Pool.
Cassidy Wheeler will attend Millersville University to major in music education. Cassidy, daughter of Heidi and Jeffrey Wheeler, is president of the Thespian Society, secretary of student council, and a member of the class of 2024 executive council. She is a member of the band and treble choir, and recently played the part of Cinderella in “Into the Woods.” Cassidy also has performed with Waynesboro Children’s Theater and Chambersburg Community Theater and was a music education intern at Summitview Elementary.
Officers of the club for the 2023-24 year announced at the banquet include: Barbara Hayes, president; Caroline Royer, vice president; Karen Herald, recording secretary; Debbie Pflager, corresponding secretary; and Ruth Strausbaugh, treasurer.
