WAYNESBORO – Five students at Waynesboro Area Senior High School have been awarded scholarships of $5,000 each by Waynesboro College Club. The winners were announced at the club’s 91st banquet April 30 in Waynesboro Country Club.
One objective of the club is to encourage interest in obtaining a college education among high school students.
The students are:
Emma Bercaw, daughter of Mike and Cathy Bercaw of Waynesboro, will attend Penn State Altoona to study biochemistry. Emma was president of the Art Club, French Club and Envirothon, secretary of Garden Club and Student Council and was the Homecoming Queen. She attended the HOBY Youth Leadership Conference.
Nikki Davis, daughter of Richard and Karen Davis of Waynesboro, will attend Messiah University to study elementary education. Nikki, who was ranked first in her class, was a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of the Class of 2025 Executive Council.
Aiden Hess, son of Kyle and Alison Hess of Waynesboro, will attend Swarthmore College to major in engineering and biology. Aiden was captain of the swim and cross country teams, president of German National Honor Society and a member of PA Math League. He and his mother developed and marketed hand sanitizer during COVID.
Eve Phillips, daughter of Shane and Amie Phillips of Waynesboro, will attend Mount St. Mary’s University to study data science. Eve was captain of the varsity swim team, an All-American finalist, a member of PA Math League and Executive Council and president of National Spanish Honor Society.
Kyle Swanson, son of Wendy Swanson of Waynesboro, will attend Cornell University to study mechanical engineering. A three sport athlete, Kyle was a member of the varsity football, swimming and diving, and track and field teams, secretary of the class of 2025 Executive Council, and a member of the Math League, Science Olympiad and Brain Busters teams. He also was a Lenfest Scholar.
Officers of the club for the 2024-25 year announced at the banquet include: Caroline Royer, president; Debi Duffey, vice president; Karen Herald, recording secretary; Debbie Pflager, corresponding secretary; and Ruth Strausbaugh, treasurer.
