Two local young dancers were among just 23 individuals recently awarded scholarships to a workshop in New York City.
Ailey, the parent organization of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recently announced that Jonesboro’s Daelyn Francis, 15, and Hampton’s Kestin Raines, 14, won scholarships to the Ailey Experience NYC workshop hosted by Ailey Extension, a program of dance and fitness classes for people of all ages and experience levels.
Francis and Raines will explore dance with more than 70 peers from around the world and rehearse choreography by renowned New York City artists to perform in front of a small audience, according to a press release by Ailey.
Ailey Experience NYC is designed to embody the diversity of the Ailey dancer with technique classes introducing young people ages 8 to 21 to the world of choreography in a non-competitive environment.
Participants train with professional dancers — including former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II company members in Ailey’s home at The Joan Weill Center for Dance.
“ The young dancers get to deepen their dance knowledge by exploring styles such as ballet, Horton, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, West African, and more as well as rehearse original choreography to present during a final showcase for family and friends at the Ailey Citigroup Theater,” a press release read.
Francis and Raines were awarded the scholarships — which covers the enrollment fee for the five-day workshop — after participating in Ailey Experience Atlanta earlier this year.
