SUAMICO, Wis. (WBAY) – A Suamico watch party for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday was also a fundraiser to help several high school students preparing for college receive some much-needed financial help.
The event was hosted by fraternity and sorority members of the historical black Greek-letter organizations, who also dressed up to watch the derby at Olde 41 in Suamico.
Money raised will cover the cost of four scholarships to be handed out to local high school students expecting to graduate this summer.
The president of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s NE Wisconsin chapter says that for someone who went to a four-year university on a scholarship, giving back to the next generation means a lot.
“I think we’re going to see the workforce and the economic impact in the long run. And to be a part of that at this level, where we can see our legacy in this way, is very special,” says Jamila Seaton.
