TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Topeka Art Guild opened its doors for First Friday, with a special twist for some young students. The gallery invited the community to view and buy pieces from local artists in Topeka.
Young artists from Hayden High School had their pieces on display. They came by to show off their art to family and friends. At 5 p.m., three high school seniors from across Topeka were awarded scholarships for art school, while also getting their names out in the community.
“The Topeka Art Guild does a wonderful job of inviting the local high schools and providing this for local artists,” said Carrie Jo Gros, a Hayden High School Art Teacher. “Like I said before, it’s a great opportunity for them to be exposed to the art, and just the whole environment of the art.”
“College has just gotten to be very expensive these days, and an organization like the University of Chicago’s Art Institute they might be paying $30,000 a quarter or a semester, so it’s expensive. So we’re excited to even be helping a little,” said Cynthia Stotlar-Hedberg, a Board Member from the Topeka Art Guild.
Aradia Freed, Kyleigh Chrisman, and Brigitte Theroff all won scholarships. Two of the offered scholarships were for $1000, while one was for $300.
