Swinging with a purpose, local golfers recently put their clubs to philanthropic use at the 18th Annual SISD Golf Tournament, piling up a hefty $120,660 in scholarship funds for Socorro Independent School District students. While golfers aimed for the greens, their efforts were cemented in the fairways of academic opportunity as the community came together at Butterfield Trail Golf Club, reported Socorro ISD News.
In a statement released by the district, SISD Superintendent James Vasquez expressed gratitude to the sponsors who have been instrumental in transforming the futures of many young academics: “We couldn’t have this event without our sponsors,” Vasquez said. “Year after year, they support us, they support our students, they understand the mission,” as per Socorro ISD News. The event, steeped in camaraderie and competition saw AETNA lead the charge as the Diamond Sponsor with a mighty $25,000 donation, along with Speaking Rock Entertainment Center, ACO Remodeling and Construction, Inc., and Banes General Contractors who each brought $10,000 to the table as Platinum Sponsors; the participation consisted of 29 teams and 116 players who were not just there to enjoy a day out on the course but with the clarity that their involvement was sculpting brighter futures.
Since its inception in 2005, the SISD Foundation’s annual golf tournament has turned into a beacon of hope for post-secondary pursuers, coupling with employee and community contributions to advance educational scholarships, the funds have consistently aided students at each of the district’s six comprehensive high schools, including a scholarship for Mission Early College High School and another for Options High school, the initiative has landed more than $1.25 million into the golf bags of deserving students, “We’re just super excited and so appreciative of all of our vendors who are here every single year, looking forward to this event,” SISD Foundation President Esther McCarthy enthusiastically told Socorro ISD News. “They are so loyal to us and to the students of our district.”
