In spring 2025, the University of Michigan Club of Downriver awarded scholarships to three graduating seniors who will attend the University of Michigan this fall.
Out of the 22 high schools with students who are eligible to apply for these scholarships, two of the student recipients attended Grosse Ile High School.
Tommy Cappellino from Grosse Ile High School will attend the Ross School of Business in fall 2025. Cappellino is receiving the organization’s Lloyd Carr Scholarship. Cappellino is the valedictorian of his graduating class. He played baseball, football and basketball during his high school career. He also started his own lawn care business during his last two years of school.
“When we interviewed him on Zoom we wondered why he was wearing headphones while talking to us. He was not listening to music. He explained with six noisy siblings in the house, it gets a little hard to concentrate,” the press release reads.
Cole Gilbert also attended Grosse Ile High School and was awarded the John and Sue Ghindia Award. Gilbert is the salutatorian of his graduating class and will be studying engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in fall 2025.
“Here is a true leader. he enjoyed helping others learn to row when he was a coxswain, helping others with soccer skills when he was captain of the team and helping others in his boy scout patrol with camping skills, and helping his robotics team as the captain,” the press release reads.
The third scholarship recipient is Adia Pettigrew, who had an unconventional high school experience. She started out at the Roeper School for the gifted. When that didn’t work out, Pettigrew returned to Riverview High School. Still, the school was not a good fit for her, so she wound up taking college classes at the University of Michigan in Dearborn throughout her high school career. She earned 38 credit hours of college work before graduating. Pettigrew is receiving the Kenneth Hartwell Scholarship and will be attending the residential college in fall 2025.
These scholarships and awards were presented at Arnaldo’s Banquet Center in Riverview May 8.
