P.E.O. International has awarded its esteemed $2,500 STAR Scholarship to two outstanding graduating seniors from the Tyler area — an honor given to just 1,233 young women across the U.S. and Canada this year.
Officials say this achievement highlights the strength of local schools and the excellence of students in the Tyler community.
Tyler Legacy High School’s Alba Tomás-Martinez is bound for UT-Austin in August to pursue her passion to study architecture. A math whiz from an early age, Tomás-Martinez also enjoys art and drawing.
“I’ve admired buildings old and new for years and wondered about what architects were thinking when they designed them,” Tomás-Martinez said.
Taking advantage of additional special training offered through Tyler’s Career and Technology Center, she now looks forward to building models in a studio in college.
Alexa Remigo, of Bishop Thomas K. Gorman High School, heads for Texas A&M in August. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she plans a career in the medical field, possibly as a physician. In the meantime, this summer she’ll be working with a professor at UT-Tyler on biomedical research, examining DNA in lung tissues.
Staying active physically is also a passion for this graduating senior: “I plan to continue running, biking, and swimming each week to prepare for the fall Rose City Triathlon,” Remigo said.
P.E.O. International is a sisterhood of women who celebrate, support, and motivate women. To learn more about P.E.O.’s educational philanthropies or join the team, visit to www.peointernational.org. From there, click on the Membership or Educational Support links for more information.
