Scholarship forms are found on the bulletin board in the Mifflin County High School Guidance Office.
LEWISTOWN — With graduation season quickly approaching, many students have their future plans on the forefront of their minds. For students looking to attend college, scholarships are very helpful as they provide financial aid for tuition, books, and necessities.
In order to apply for a scholarship, students should first stop by the guidance office to see what opportunities are available. By looking at the eligibility requirements and talking to a school counselor, students can find the right scholarships for themselves.
One of Mifflin County High School’s guidance counselors, Mrs. Kennigton, gives this piece of advice for those wanting to apply for a scholarship:
“We have local scholarships for seniors–most of those applications are paper applications, and seniors need to stop by the Guidance Office regularly to check to see what new opportunities are available.”
There are also websites online to help apply for scholarships, many of which are profile websites. They help students filter different scholarships and find the right ones for them, as well as apply for multiple at a time. Interested students should be sure to stop by the guidance office to get a handout for more information on those websites.
Seniors are not the only people who can apply for a scholarship, however. juniors can apply, too. Those scholarships, however, are at a state or national level, and it means there will be
more applicants.
Mrs. Kennigton also said, “We encourage students to apply for anything for which they qualify because someone has to win the money, and it could be you.”
The guidance office also strongly recommends all students looking at higher education after high school to start searching and applying for scholarships as soon as possible. However, seniors should be very cautious as to which are legitimate and which are not.
The guidance office cautioned, if a student is searching for a scholarship on their own and there is a cost, do not do it. There are no costs involved when applying for a scholarship and applicants should never be asked to pay in order to apply.
Students should talk to their school counselor as they can help guide students in the right direction through any complicated processes.
Students should also ask for letters of recommendation from teachers and others at least a week in advance.
Another great piece of advice came from guidance secretary, Mrs. McCarter.
“Apply for every scholarship that you qualify for,” she said. “Keep copies of your essays so that you can tweak them to fit each scholarship. With a little time and effort, you may win one of the scholarships and be on your way to paying for your future education.”
