The U.S. Department of State recently recognized schools that host YES, FLEX and CBYX scholarship recipients through a program called the Medallion Member School Program.
In Humboldt County, schools that were recognized are Arcata High School, hosting AFS FLEX student Margarita Stepanyan from Armenia; Eureka High School, hosting AFS YES student Seha Damci from Turkey; and McKinleyville High School, hosting AFS YES student Samona Arif from Pakistan.
The Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program provides scholarships for high school students from Europe and Eurasia to spend an academic year in the United States, living with a family and attending an American high school. About one in 50 applicants are ultimately selected. Opportunities are also available for local students to go abroad on the FLEX program.
Through the U.S. Department of State’s Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program, high school students from countries with significant Muslim populations live and study for an academic year in the United States. Participants live with a host family, attend high school, acquire leadership skills, and engage in activities to learn about U.S. society and values; they also help educate Americans about their home country and culture. Opportunities are also available for high school students to go abroad on the YES Study Abroad program.
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, or CBYX, program is an immersive exchange program jointly offered by the U.S. and German governments.
Local school principals were notified of the State Department recognition via email earlier this year when they were given the digital version of the Medallion Certificate to use on their website or social media. The official certificates were presented by the AFS students in this program to the principals at their high school.
