Eighth grade student Roman Gayvoronskiy had no idea when he walked into the Alaska Homeschool building Tuesday afternoon, December 10, he would leave with a $150 check and a chance for a $5,000 scholarship.
As a student at Delta Junior High, Gayvoronskiy penned an essay on “My Voice in Democracy.” Gayvoronskiy said it took nearly a week to finish, returning to the essay 10 to 15 minutes each day. He turned the completed essay in to his teacher and promptly forgot about it. But his mother did not, nor did the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10450. The essay was submitted as part of the VFW Patriot Pen scholarship program and Gayvornoskiy was awarded first place. Gayvoronoskiy was both humbled and surprised by the win, stating he didn’t expect anything to come of his writing.
He is one of 38 students across Alaska who submitted an essay to their respective VFW posts. Out of those 38 students nine, including Gayvoronskiy, went on to compete for the number one spot in Alaska, and ultimately a chance for the national level $5,000 scholarship. While he did not place first at state, his essay earned him second place and an additional $150 scholarship from the Department of Alaska VFW.
Last month Freshman Benjamin Glass received a $150 check at the high school level for his essay on “Voice of Democracy.” A first-place win at state allows Glass to compete at the national level for a $35,000 scholarship.
Gayvoronskiy, a student at Delta Junior High when he penned the essay, is now enrolled with the Alaska Homeschool program. Glass is a student at Delta High School.
