CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It’s that time of year where it’s all about honoring our students through various graduation and scholarship ceremonies.
One of those exciting events took place downtown Thursday night, in which local veterans were honored as well.
The American G.I. Forum of South Texas, Dr. Hector P. Garcia chapter hosted their annual Veterans & Community Advocates Scholarship ceremony at the Omni.
Organizers credited the support of sponsors for their contributions, as together they were able to award over $300,000 in scholarships to students across Kleberg, Jim Wells, San Patricio and Nueces counties.
Student recipients attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas A&M Kingsville and Del Mar College were all able to have their individual scholarships matched.

The event also featured keynote speaker Diana López, a Coastal Bend native and acclaimed author of several books, one of which included the novel adaptation of Disney Pixar’s Coco. She continues to support young writers through school visits and programs.

Judith E. Talavera
Mr. Ram Chavez – a Vietnam War veteran, Purple Heart recipient and founder of the Corpus Christi Veterans Band – was also recognized at Thursday’s event as the recipient of this year’s Commander’s Award.
