The Reading Center Board of Directors honored the recipients of the second annual Pat Lund Post Secondary Scholarship awards: local students Anders Braaten, of Minnesota City, and Lanesboro grad Audrey Redalen, as well as Brooke Blegen, of Rochester, Minn. Awards were presented on May 29, 2024, by Judge Kevin Lund at The Reading Center Board of Directors Meeting.
Braaten will pursue an advanced degree to be a nurse practitioner at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. His career path allows him to excel in a hands-on environment while showcasing his empathy for others. He works as a nurse and is a health educator; he teaches clinicals and labs at St. Scholastica and owns Southeast MN Safety Services, where he trains people in first aid, lifeguarding, and wilderness first aid.
Anders participated in The Reading Center’s Best of Basics Summer Program and was tested and received tutoring. Anders says his experience with dyslexia shows how perseverance and support from others enabled him to overcome obstacles and reach his academic goals.
Anders was awarded a one-year scholarship for the duration of his advanced training.
Audrey Redalen, of Chatfield, is headed to Iowa State University to major in animal sciences this fall. She aspires to improve communication between consumers and the producers of animal products. She is graduating from Lanesboro High School and has taken courses at Rochester Community and Technical College.
Audrey not only grew up on a farm, but also has leadership experience involving farmwork as an award-winning participant in 4-H and Future Farmers of America. She sees her dyslexic brain as a strength when judging livestock or problem-solving on the farm.
Audrey was tutored at The Reading Center for five years, and she is awarded a four-year scholarship.
