Squadron Energy’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) Scholarships have been awarded to two local Year 10 students, Henry Oliver from Macintyre High School and Charlie Hope from Inverell High School.
Sapphire Wind Farm Operations Manager, David Williamson presented the awards this week during the respective schools’ end-of-year presentation evenings.
“We’re providing these scholarships to students in the New England region to give young people skills that could be relevant to the renewables sector,” Mr Williamson said.
“This is just one of many ways that we’re supporting local communities. We’re really passionate about developing pathways for students to pursue careers in STEM and the renewables industry.”
Funded by the Sapphire Wind Farm project, the scholarship provides $3,000 over two years to support a continuing student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement or progress in STEM.
Inverell High School Head Science Teacher Andrew Tann says Charlie had selected a STEM pathway for his senior studies in 2025-26.
“He demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills, extensive mathematical knowledge, problem solving skills, and analytical skills,” Mr Tann said.
“He is friendly, mature, polite, reserved, ambitious, capable, and diligent.”
Macintyre High School TAS Head Teacher Jeff Ting says Henry is an aspiring student looking to make a career in the engineering/STEM field.
“He has shown a passion for all things STEM since being introduced to the area in late primary school and has strengthened his interests whilst being at Macintyre High,” Mr Ting said.
“He has been actively involved in the various STEM programs and events offered to him. He is a driven and capable student who will continue to thrive in this area of interest.”
Sapphire Wind Farm is located on Ngarabal Country, 18km west of Glen Innes and is one of the largest operational wind farms in New South Wales and has helped the ACT Government meet its target of 100% renewables in 2020 by providing a long-term power purchase agreement.
