ORION TWP. – Lake Orion High School student Dylan Chandra was named as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist last month, according to the National Merit Scholarship Organization.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and includes entrants from each state who scored the highest on the PSAT. Around 16,000 semifinalists were selected from more than 1.3 million juniors throughout 20,000 high schools who entered the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the test.
More than 15,000 students are expected to advance to the finalist level. Winners will be selected from the group of finalists for 6,930 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring, according to the NMSO.
Winners of the 2026 scholarships will be announced April through July. Scholarship recipients will join approximately 389,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
It is the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
