Officers with the Lebanon Youth Baseball / Softball Association presented scholarships to three former players during ceremonies held May 30 at Lebanon’s Baird Park.
The $2,500 Dawson Scholarships were awarded to three alumni players, Eli Hodge and Cade Thorne from Lebanon High and Wyatt Phillips from Watertown High.
Hodge and Thorne will attend Tennessee-Knoxville in the fall while Phillips will attend Cumberland University.
Hodge is the son of Amy and Chris Hodge. He served as Student Body President and Vice-President of the LHS Choir. He participated in Youth Leadership Wilson, Student Council Devil’s Chord and Wilson County Teen Court. He was honored with the DAR Citizenship Award and was voted Mr. LHS.
Thorne is the son of Heath and Kelly Thorne. He has been a four-year starter for the Blue Devils and served as team captain for the past two seasons. He’s a four-year member of the LHS Honor Roll and has been involved in student government, FCA and Habitat for Humanity. Thorne has been an active member of the College Hills Student Ministry and has volunteered with the LSSD Canned Food Drive.
Phillips, the son of Rick and Chasity Phillips, began playing baseball with LYB at the age of three and has played every year since — including playing for the Lebanon Dixie Youth World Series team in 2019. Playing centerfield for the Purple Tigers, his high school career at Watertown included three district championships. He was voted “Coming Home” King by his peers and he maintained a 3.8 GPA.
Established in 2019, the Dawson scholarship program has to date awarded some $37,500 to help former players advance their education.
The scholarships are presented annually in honor of Karen and Fred Dawson, who were instrumental in creating as well as donating to the program.
