LYNDHURST, Ohio — Nice weather and a good-sized crowd made for an ideal National Night Out event at Lyndhurst Park Tuesday.
The city, like many others around the country, celebrates Aug. 5 as National Night Out, an evening meant to bring police — and in this case firefighters, as well — together with residents for a celebration of community.
The event is held to encourage a stronger connection between safety forces and the people they serve.
In Lyndhurst, the event included free hot dogs and ice cream, a magic show by illusionist Rick Smith Jr., music and booths where residents could speak with safety forces and pick up information on how to make the community a safer place.
And, as is the case every year, the Lyndhurst Police Foundation uses the occasion to bestow scholarships upon three high school students as they enter college looking to pursue careers in public service.
This year, those awarded scholarships for their academic and extracurricular achievements while in high school were:
— Scarlett Drury, a 2025 graduate of Brush High School. Drury was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. She plans to pursue a career in nursing. She will major in nursing beginning this fall at Ohio University.
— Charlie Brunello, a 2025 Mayfield High School graduate, was awarded a $500 scholarship. Brunello, of Highland Heights, will attend John Carroll University in the fall, where he will major in criminology and business management.
His father, Chuck Brunello Jr., is an active member of FOPA Lodge No. 57.
— Nicholas Carcelli, also from the Mayfield High School’s Class of 2025, was awarded a $500 scholarship as he prepares to attend Ashland University in the fall. A Highland Heights resident, he plans to major in early education.
The Lyndhurst Police Foundation was formed for police officers to give back to the residents they serve.
The foundation holds Safety Town for children and fundraisers for scholarships.
These include an annual golf outing, to be held this year Sept. 15 at Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in South Euclid, and a reverse raffle dinner that was held in April.
