Madison Area Democratic Women Accepting Applications for $2,500 Sue Shelton White Scholarship
JACKSON, TN, January 15, 2025 – Madison Area Democratic Women (MADW) announced it is accepting applications for its $2,500 scholarship in honor of Sue Shelton White, the West Tennessee suffragist and lawyer who played a pivotal role in winning the equal right to vote for women.
“We are committed to supporting and empowering the women and girls in our area. This is just one way that we work towards that mission—by helping women complete their college degrees,” said MADW President Heather Fitzgerald.
The theme of this year’s scholarship is service, in honor of President Jimmy Carter and all Americans we lost in the past year who devoted themselves to a life of service. There are many ways in which a person can be of service to her family, her community and her country. Scholarship applicants will be asked to write an essay on the topic: “Describe a person whose life of service has influenced you. How has that person inspired you to model that service in your own life?”
The Sue Shelton White Scholarship is open to nontraditional women students residing in Madison County and neighboring counties. The scholarship is designed to assist women who want to complete their education while also managing the demands of work and family.
Applications for the scholarship are available at the MADW website: www.madwomentn.org. Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2025. The scholarship winner will be announced in March in celebration of Women’s History Month.
