MANTON — Chris Mundy may not literally bleed green and white, but the Michigan State colors run in his blood.
The Manton and Michigan State grad established a scholarship endowment in honor of his parents Gerry and Libby, who met at MSU while students there.
“I wanted to do something to honor my parents and establish a legacy for them,” Chris Mundy said.
The Gerald Mundy, Jr, and Elizabeth Mundy Endowed Scholarship is for northern Michigan student-athletes competing in non-revenue sports — track and field, golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, rowing, lacrosse, cross country and swimming — at Michigan State.
The first recipient was Traverse City Central 2020 graduate Carolyn Garner, a senior rower for the Spartans.
“I am grateful for these opportunities this award will provide me and I hope to continue to represent MSU and the athletics department with such passion,” Garner said. “I look forward to paying it back upon my graduation.”
The second scholarship went to another TC Central athlete, senior track distance runner Avery McLean.
“The support of an athletic scholarship has meant the world to me,” McLean said. “It has allowed me to fully focus on both my athletic and academic pursuits, lifting the financial burden that could otherwise be a major source of stress. Knowing that I have this support motivates me to give my best in everything I do, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity I had to represent my school with pride as I worked toward my goals.”
Chris Mundy, a Manton graduate who has lived in Chicago for 30 years, set up the scholarship.
The Mundy family moved from Milford to Manton in 1973 and lived there 13 years, including playing football, basketball and baseball for the Rangers.
“Manton has a bigger impact on my life that Chicago does,” said Mundy, a 51-year-old real estate broker. “Knowing the journey of a local athlete, we wanted to assist with the goal of playing sports at the next level.”
The scholarship is open to any athletes from Clare up into the Upper Peninsula. The value can vary from year to year, depending on the endowment’s investment return.
Mundy said the long-term goal is to provide a full scholarship yearly.
Gerald Mundy was a varsity swimmer for Michigan and graduated in 1966. He and Libby Mundy met at MSU in 1965, were engaged on Grand River Avenue and married two years later.
Both Chris Mundy and his older sister Meaghan attended Michigan State as well.
“The fact my parents met in East Lansing and at MSU begins our rich history and love for the green and white,” Mundy said. “Some of my youngest memories as a child were trips to East Lansing from Northern Michigan, walking Grand River, visits to SBS for a souvenir and trips to Spartan Stadium and Jenison Field House.”
Tax-deductible gifts to the fund can be made by family, friends, peers or associates of the Mundy Family. For more information or to nominate someone for the scholarship, please reach out to the Michigan State University, Spartan Fund at (517) 432-4635 or Ethan Hemer at ehemer@ath.msu.edu.
