The Woman’s Club of Massapequa awarded two scholarships at its May general meeting, where the club also presented a “Birthday in a Box” to benefit a local child in need.
Emily Ogurick and Amanda Kammerdener were this year’s scholarship recipients. The awards were presented by child welfare chair JoAnn Hundertmark, with club president Fran Cloud presiding over the meeting.
Emily attended with her parents, Lauren and Don Ogurick. Amanda was joined by her mother, Sarah Kammerdener. Emily’s speech teacher, Janet Peters—a member of the Woman’s Club — also attended and posed for a photo with her student.
The “Birthday in a Box” initiative, highlighted during the meeting, provides birthday celebrations for disadvantaged children who might otherwise go without. In collaboration with the nonprofit organization Birthday Wishes, the club collects a list of the child’s interests, then purchases and wraps several gifts, presenting them in a decorated box.
