The Douglas County Master Gardner Association announced the creation of a new scholarship fund for local horticulture students.
The press release said the fund is through the Umpqua Community College Foundation and is aimed at supporting students who study horticulture, agriculture, botany, environmental science or related fields.
“This scholarship fund is a natural extension of our mission to foster knowledge and stewardship of gardening and environmental practices,” association president Ann Severson said in the press release. “By investing in the next generation of plant and environmental science professionals, we’re helping cultivate a healthier and more sustainable future — for Douglas County and beyond.”
The press release said the scholarship is designed for students who demonstrate academic potential, a passion for plant sciences and a desire to make a positive impact through green industry careers.
“We have been fortunate to have a really supportive community who is contributes to our organization by either donation or support with our events like our plant sale or other things like that, and we have found that we have the funds to do something to give back to the community,” association publicity chair Tracy Grubbs said.
The initiative reflects the association’s commitment to education, sustainable gardening practices and community enrichment.
The funds from the scholarship were raised through association fundraising efforts and donations from local supporters. The funds will be managed and distributed through the UCC Foundation. The master gardeners association hopes to have the first scholarship out next year, Grubbs said.
“Sometimes we have community members who will donate to our organization, and they will have a specific way that they want the funds used,” Grubbs said. “And this is actually something that someone could specifically donate to, and it could be added to this fund.”
According to the Umpqua Community College website, the UCC Foundation helps make higher education accessible to anyone who dreams of attending college and making a difference in the community. The foundation offers grants and private gifts of all sort to fund scholarships and make college more affordable and supported.
