Matin Ghalami is the first squash athlete accepted to the Refugee Athlete Support programme ahead of the sport’s inclusion at LA28.
Ghalami is one of 47 athletes to be included on the programme that is ran by the Olympic Refuge Foundation.
The Refugee Athlete scholarships make athletes eligible for inclusion in the Refugee Olympic Team at Olympic and Youth Olympic Games. To benefit from the programme, athletes must be elite competitors in their respective sport and be refugees in their host country, recognised by UNCHR, the UN Refugee Agency.
Originally from Shiraz, Iran, Ghalami started playing squash as a 12 year old. He arrived in the UK in 2022 and settled in Wolverhampton where he studied at college as a Squash scholar.
Today, as a refugee in Manchester he trains and plays squash at the Manchester Squash Club and explores balancing his academic interests with his growing passion for squash. In the future, Matin is excited to promote the image of the sport he loves.
Mohammadreza Jafarzadeh Kenarsari is another squash athlete included on the programme. Based in Canada, Â he has since been competing on the Professional Squash Association tour and continues to improve under his coaches.
