NORTH FORK, NY — A Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School senior has made his hometown proud.
Jay Tian Yi Chen was named a Commended Student in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program for his exceptional academic promise, the district said.
Although he will not continue in the 2026 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, his recognition is an “outstanding accomplishment,” the district said.
Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2026 competition by taking the 2024 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
In addition to his exceptional academic talents, Jay is an avid chess player and belongs to the high school’s chess club. He is also a member of Mathletes. Outside of the classroom, Jay is a talented tri-sport athlete as he is a member of the school’s cross-country, basketball and lacrosse teams.
“We are extremely proud of Jay for being recognized as a National Merit Commended Student,” Principal Patrick K. Burke said. “This achievement speaks to his hard work and passion for learning. Jay is a shining example of the dedication and spirit we see every day at Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School.”
