Next month, 88 students will gather in Montreal to participate in final interviews for a chance to join the fifth cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at McGill. Their names are available on the McCall MacBain Scholarship website.
Of the finalists, 52 come from Quebec or elsewhere in Canada and 36 from abroad. Countries represented for the first time include Bangladesh, Belgium, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Italy, Myanmar, South Sudan, Ukraine and Yemen.
Established with a landmark $200-million gift in 2019, McCall MacBain Scholarships are Canada’s largest leadership-based scholarships for master’s and professional studies. The program brings together scholars from around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to making a positive impact in people’s lives.
“We need more leaders who act with integrity, kindness, curiosity and courage,” said Marcy McCall MacBain, Chair of the McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill. “We congratulate these students who have already distinguished themselves as the top candidates nationally and globally, and we thank the universities that nominated them for this opportunity.”
Each scholarship covers tuition and fees, a living stipend of $2,300 per month during academic terms, summer funding options, mentorship, coaching, a leadership curriculum and access to the McCall MacBain House. A relocation grant is provided for scholars coming from outside of Montreal.
Several thousand students and graduates applied for this opportunity, with the top 279 participating in regional interviews in October and November to earn an invitation to the final interview round in Montreal March 20 to 22.

Finalists will be interviewed by volunteer leaders from academia, business, government and the social sector. This year’s volunteers have also helped in previous years. They include Ashok Dyalchand, Director of the Institute of Health Management in Pachod, India; Miranda Keating Erickson (BCom’95), Director of VIA Rail Canada and Calgary Co-op; Yaa-Hemaa Obiri-Yeboah, entrepreneur and a former Regional Director at Global Affairs Canada; and Patrick Pichette, former CFO of Google, who interviews candidates in Europe.
“It is a joy to meet the students interviewing for this scholarship,” said Obiri-Yeboah. “They are working hard to improve their communities. We wish them a warm welcome to McGill and Montreal, especially those visiting Canada for the very first time.”
Up to 30 McCall MacBain Scholars will be selected after the final interviews. Finalists not selected for the cohort will be eligible to receive a McCall MacBain Finalist Award of $10,000 for Canadian students or $20,000 for international students.
In addition to the finalists, 58 students ranked as top candidates in their region. Each receives a McCall MacBain Regional Award of $5,000 for Canadian students or $10,000 for international students for their future studies.
