Dozens of people recently gathered in the W. Harold Smith Building at McDowell Technical Community College to dedicate five classrooms and celebrate a new $50,000 endowed scholarship created by John & Carole Borden and Chip & Dr. Penny Cross.
Their joint gift — augmented by federal Title III matching funds — will provide need-based awards to McDowell Tech students in perpetuity.
During the dedication ceremony, J.W. Kelley, McDowell Tech president, and each of the donors unveiled wall plaques in five rooms of the Harold Smith Building.
“Every plaque on these walls tells a story of service,” Kelley said during the unveiling attended by nearly 50 guests. “When donors honor mentors, first-responders and community leaders, our students see tangible proof that education and public service go hand-in-hand.”

Together, the couples contributed $26,000 to establish a scholarship, an amount that will be matched with $24,000 in Title III funds after Oct. 1, 2025, bringing the total scholarship endowment to $50,000.
“This generous gift will allow the McDowell Tech Foundation to complete its Title III matching grant goal, increasing our endowed scholarship funds to a level that will make a lasting difference for students,” said Madalyn Gaito, director of development. “This isn’t just a financial milestone, it’s a legacy of opportunity that will support McDowell Tech students for generations to come.”
