LAPEER — Three McLaren Lapeer Region employees have been awarded scholarships to help further their education in healthcare related fields, courtesy of the McLaren Lapeer Region Foundation.
This week, the foundation presented three $1,000 scholarships to occupational therapy assistant Stephanie Palmer, switchboard operator McKenna Ringle and Chelsea Ross, an OB unit clerk/technician. The scholarship program was established by the McLaren Lapeer Region Foundation to assist employees in paying for college and advancing their careers.
“We believe that investing in our employees’ education is essential for both their personal growth and the overall success of our organization,” said Michelle Gordon, manager of marketing for the McLaren Lapeer Region Foundation. “Congratulations to the recipients, and we look forward to seeing how these scholarships contribute to their future in healthcare.”
Palmer has been employed at McLaren Lapeer Region for eight years in the rehab unit working with transitional care patients. She is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at the University of Michigan.
“As someone who works in healthcare, I saw that there were some needs that were unmet in the community with mental health,” said Palmer. “That brought me to the social work field, and I wanted to do more with helping patients navigate healthcare and have more access to one-on-one counseling services. With the cost of school, every little bit of financial aid is beneficial and helps me achieve my goals.”
Ringle has been with the hospital for four years in the communications field and is pursuing a degree as a radiology technologist at Baker College.
“I’m super appreciative to McLaren for offering this scholarship opportunity,” she said. “This will definitely help me pursue my career.”
Ross has worked for eight years in the hospital’s Mother/Baby Unit and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Chamberlain University.
“Having four kids and a family at home, it’s hard to meet the financial cost of school,” she said. “This scholarship will help me achieve my BSN. I’m looking forward to continuing my career up in the (McLaren Lapeer Region) birth center as a nurse.”
Gordon said three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to hospital employees by the McLaren Region Foundation. Previously, the foundation gave out a single $1,000 employee scholarship. Palmer, Ross and Ringle are the first McLaren Lapeer Region employees to receive a financial award from the foundation since 2018.
