Eight high school students received $12,000 scholarships at the 40th annual Scholastic Achievement Awards ceremony at the Menlo-Atherton High School Performing Arts Center presented by the Menlo Park Rotary Club.
In addition, students from Menlo-Atherton, Eastside College Preparatory, Menlo School and East Palo Alto Academy also received scholastic achievement awards.
The evening began with a performance from the Menlo-Atherton jazz band which preceded welcoming remarks from Bob Andrews, president of the Rotary Club, Drew Combs, mayor of Menlo Park and Karl Losekoot, principal of Menlo-Atherton High School.
Scholastic achievement awards were presented to 112 students by the principals or school director of Menlo-Atherton, Eastside Preparatory Academy, Sacred Heart Preparatory and Menlo School. The awards covered subjects ranging from science and Algebra to English as a second language.
The $12,000 scholarships were given to Ebise Biratu, Jo Jo Flores, Damian Villarreal-Ayala, Stefany Herrera Soto, Gabriel Sandoval, Emily Camero and Josue Ruiz and were presented by John Blake, president of the Menlo Rotary Community Foundation, and Rob Holyoake, co-chair of the mentor committee.
Funds for the scholarships were received from the Tsui/Tsiang family; the Rotary Club Foundation, the family of John D. Russell, the Crittenden family, Mary Ann Somerville, Wilcox and Sandra Patterson, Orm and Doris Rector and Meta.
The total amount of scholarships awarded this year by the Rotary Club of Menlo Park totaled $32,000. The club also donated $53,000 to more than a dozen local community nonprofit groups.
