CLEVELAND — Three northeast Ohio college students are honoring the legacy of former MetroHealth executive Walter B. Jones Jr. as they recently became the first recipients of onetime $5,000 scholarships in his honor.
“Through the Jones Scholars Endowment, established in partnership with the Jones family, students continue to build upon the foundation Walter laid,” MetroHealth said in a news release.
The scholarship recipients are:
The Walter B. Jones Jr. Scholars Endowment was created after Jones passed away in late 2023. Jones played a major role in the MetroHealth community as the health network’s Senior Vice President of Transformation. Starting in 2014, Jones went on to lead the design, construction and the opening of The Glick Center. Throughout the center’s construction, Jones was invested in the success of high school students in construction mentorship and internship programs.
Each year, through the Jones Scholars Endowment, a one-year, non-renewable, $5,000 scholarship is provided to a deserving high school senior with preference for students within the following programs:
The lead funder for the Jones Scholars Endowment was Turner Construction, a longtime MetroHealth partner.
“Walter was one of a kind, a true visionary leader,” said Taurean Spratt, vice president and general manager of the Ohio Region at Turner Construction. “We are proud to contribute to carrying forward his legacy.”
