Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the governor of Sonora announced more than 300 scholarships for students at the Universidad del Pueblo Yaqui in what was her first visit to the state since taking office.
She said at an event at the university that Mexico wouldn’t be what it is today without its indigenous communities.
The university is located in the town of Vícam, one of the main settlements of the Yaqui people.
The degrees offered at the university include education, public health and sustainable engineering.
