MHS Class of 1988 established a scholarship fund for Milford students
During the planning of their 35th reunion that was held in September 2023, Milford High School Class of 1988 Reunion Committee decided they wanted to create a lasting legacy. The group decided that although seeing old classmates was great, they wanted to give back to the community, the school and future alumni.
“At the reunion, we raised $2,400 toward the scholarship,” Jim Purcell said. “We issued our first scholarship to Amanda Potter so that she could continue her studies at Del Tech.”
The group hoped to create their own foundation, but research discovered that would be too expensive and time consuming. Purcell explained that the group decided to create a fund through the Greater Lewes Foundation, a local foundation that specializes in hosting funds for scholarships in Southern Delaware.
“We are looking for well-rounded students at Milford High School who not only perform academically but are also involved with their school and community, involved in activities, service projects and more,” Purcell said. “At this time, the scholarship is only for Milford High School students.”
The scholarship is $1,000 and can be used for any post-secondary education or college, including technical programs. Purcell stated that they are asking classmates and community members to join in giving back to Milford’s future alumni by supporting the Class of 1988 Fund. All applications are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee which consists of Tina Harrington Dana Isom (Pritchett), Kristine Beach (Greenley) and Purcell.
“In years to come, we’d like to grow the fund to include other things that we might give back, not only to alumni, but help support Milford High School education and activities,” Purcell said.
There is a secure site to make donations to the fund via the Greater Lewes Foundation website.
