The annual community service day for McClain High School is approaching, and student organizers presented a little about what MHS Day means during the March 31 board of education meeting.
Always held in May, MHS Day began in 2015, initiated by then McClain Principal Jason Potts. In recent years, the McClain FFA has taken over the organization of the day, FFA members Toree Wareikis and Addison Goddard said.
They briefly discussed yearly projects – which include landscaping work, cemetery clean up, washing emergency vehicles, among other activities – as well as projects new to this year, like a fundraising car wash, reading to younger elementary students, and creating hygiene bags for the homeless shelter.
Goddard and Wareikis said they are still looking for ways for McClain students to help the community on MHS Day, and if anyone has some ideas, they are welcome to share them with them. They can be contacted via email at addison.goddard@greenfieldmcclain.org and toree.wareikis@greenfieldmcclain.org.
In other business, treasurer Brad Barber reported that a district-wide inventory will take place later in April. This work will happen after school hours so as not to disrupt the school day.
Barber also reported that this year the district will be awarding 55 scholarships, more than double last year’s 25. The board will have a special meeting later in April to determine the scholarship recipients.
In her report, Superintendent Quincey Gray said the performance of Disney’s Descendents will be this coming weekend, April 4-5, in the high school auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Prior to Saturday’s performance, G3 and Y-Gradale are teaming up for a fundraising event in the cafeteria. Beginning at 5 p.m., the Tunes & Stews Cook-off will offer soups, chili, and mac and cheese. While there is a competition among the cooks of the soups, there is also a kids-only competition for the best mac and cheese. You can check out G3’s Facebook page for all the information. All proceeds from the event will go toward the auditorium renovation project.
On a related matter, Gray reported that as of the last auditorium-related meeting on March 27, just shy of $100,000 had been collected through fundraising efforts for the auditorium renovation.
Student advisory council member Nicolas Alvarez, who graduates in May, spoke to the board about his time in the district. Alvarez and his family moved to the area from out of state when he and his brother were in elementary school, he said, and through all these years, the district has been like family. He talked about the friendships built, the memories made, and the young adult he has become, of being “part of something bigger” than himself, and of the foundation he has because of the community that has “been on my side” since coming here as a child.
