MEMPHIS, Tenn. – One Mid-South fraternity is preparing to hit the green this month, and they’re inviting you to join the fun for a good cause. The Sigma Rho Lamda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is hosting their 4th Annual Jewel Guild Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 20th.
For the past four years, members say the tournament has helped the Bartlett Alphas provide more than $25,000 in scholarships and supports their programs at area schools where they mentor more than 100 young men.
“We believe in making sure our youth have a great start in life,” said James Whittaker, Chairman of the Jewel Guild Foundation. “But not only do we look at youth, we look at the whole spectrum of our community. So there are some other additional things we’re doing within our community related to helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity. We’ve also done mentorship with a number of high schools and junior high schools. So this golf tournament helps to help raise funds for those particular programs.”
“We are inviting all of those who have participated in the past, both players and sponsors,” added Alex Marshall, president of the Sigma Rho Lamda Chapter. “It’s not too late. Come on out. Be a part of the fun. We’re also planning to just have an opportunity just to hang out. So if you’re not busy, got a few hours, come out, hang out with us at the golf course. We’ll have music, we’ll have a DJ there. We’ll have just entertainment in terms of just being on the golf course, being able to just kind of fellowship and hang out.”
In addition to the family fun, the event will host a $75,000 hole-in-one contest with the winner getting the chance to drive away in a new car, courtesy of Lincoln of Memphis. Other sponsors include Simmons Bank, Independent Bank, Relentless Threadz, Remac, and Mayweather Boxing Fitness.
The Scholarship Golf Tournament happens Saturday, September 20th, at the Fair Oaks Golf Club in Oakland, TN. The four-man scramble starts at 8a.m. FOX13 Good Morning Memphis anchor Ernie Freeman is this year’s Master of Ceremonies.
