MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Mid-South mother is honoring the life of her late son after his death in an accidental shooting ten years ago.
Tara Cash created the Curtis Johnson Foundation, turning her son’s death into advocacy that will hopefully save the lives of many.
Two weeks away from his high school graduation 10 years ago, Curtis Johnson looked forward to the rest of his life.
He never saw his graduation day from Southwind High School when his life was cut short.
Curtis’s friend accidentally shot and killed the 18-year-old.
His mother, Tara Cash, hurt with the loss of her son, decided to keep his memory alive by creating the Curtis Johnson Foundation.
The foundation offers scholarships to Mid-South high school seniors who have taken on the mission of ending gun violence.
“All of our students have to write an essay on creating solutions to put an end to gun violence,” Cash said.
Since 2017, 53 students have received scholarships from the foundation.
Cash said the foundation is dedicated to finding a solution and scholarship recipients must display a passion for creating solutions to ending gun violence and promoting responsible gun safety in their community.
“I still keep in touch with a lot of the students that have been awarded the scholarships. Many have gone on to be nurses, have some that are in law school. I even have a student graduating from Rice University today,” Cash said.
Cash said the process of reviewing essays for this year’s seniors began last week.
“I lost a son to gun violence, but I have gained 53 other sons and daughters throughout this process,” Cash said.
