MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -Midland colleges’ transportation training program received funding from local organizations to help them buy a new truck and provide free tuition for students.
They were able to purchase a Peterbilt truck and pay for 20 students tuition to take the course.
The funding came from the Midland Development Corporation and The Permian Basin Workforce board.
The Peterbilt truck will help the program because it’s in great condition, and it’s what many employers are currently using.
“The newer trailer of course has some safety features. It’s got the all wheels disc brakes. It actually came with a bendix system for blind spots and to notify the student if they’re following too closely. So those are really good things to incorporate because most companies have that now.” said Robert Heinisch, Director of the Training Transportation Program at Midland College.
One of the needs in West Texas is more truck drivers. This was another reason the Permian Basin Workforce wanted to help. Eventually to get the students certified and ready to hit the road.
“It’s definitely important because it effects families as a whole. We do have a lot of businesses that come here. And the employers meet with the students on the first week for job opportunities. We do get a lot of cooperation with local businesses here at the college.” said Heinisch.
The course lasts five weeks, and this year, 92% of the students immediately got jobs. There are currently over 20 students who are on the waitlist for this program.
One of the current students in the program says he was meant to be a part of this program just like his father was.
“So my father went through it 14 years ago. Ever since he graduated the program, he got all his endorsements and everything he needs on his license. He’s real successful.” said Andrew Rico, Midland College Student.
Rico said his father inspired him to get his license.
“I look up to my father and I see the things he accomplished in life and I want to be able to do the same as well.” said Rico.
He was also one of the students that got a full ride for the program. For him, it’s a blessing to have mentors that teach him everything he needs to pass his CDL test, but also to be able to get the funding to take this course.
“Through my current situation, I’m working at a car wash, you know what I’m saying. And I can provide a proper life style with that job. And to be able to be blessed to receive funding from the school, is amazing. And I’m fitting to have a skill trait.” said Rico.
Leaders in the Midland Development Corporation and the Permian Basin Workforce board said these investments are a great opportunity for the community. For young West Texans to have an advance skilled job and for local employers to hire quality candidates to fill critical jobs.
