{KXLG – Milbank, SD} Four electrical engineering students at South Dakota State University (SDSU) have been awarded scholarships from the Power & Energy Society of the International Order of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for the current school year. Among the recipients is Drake Rogers, a Milbank, South Dakota junior.
Rogers, the son of Jonathan and Mindy Rogers, graduated from Milbank High School in 2021. He holds a 3.543 GPA and is actively involved in campus activities. At SDSU, Rogers is a member of The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band and the basketball pep band. He also serves as treasurer of the SDSU chapter of IEEE.
Rogers has received scholarships from the Center for Power Systems Studies and the North Central Electrical League, showcasing his dedication to electrical engineering. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in the power and energy sector.
Rogers is one of four SDSU students to receive the Power & Energy Society scholarship this year, joining seniors Kalen Meyer and Luke Rasmussen from Rock Rapids, Iowa, and junior Nicholas Erickson from Pierce, Nebraska. SDSU had the highest number of recipients among Midwest institutions, with Michigan Tech having only two winners.
Nationally, 84 awards were given. The University of Kentucky and the Missouri University of Science and Technology were the only other schools with four recipients. SDSU is one of only three schools with at least one Power & Energy Society Scholar selected yearly since 2011.
Steve Hietpas, an SDSU electrical engineering professor and director of the Center for Power Systems Studies, highlighted the significance of these scholarships: “The SDSU scholarship selections reflect the high caliber of students attending SDSU and the strength of the power and energy faculty, resources, and curriculum within the electrical engineering and computer science department. The numerous internships provided by Center for Power System Studies members give valuable field experience for our students, who are then able to do better in the classroom.”
Hietpas also commended Associate Professor Tim Hansen for actively promoting this scholarship and writing letters of support. All four SDSU recipients are repeat winners, with Meyer and Rasmussen being three-time recipients.
The awards are for $2,000, except for three-time recipients, who receive $3,000.
