ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – On Wednesday, the Reading Center Board of Directors will award three individuals a Pat Lund Post Secondary Scholarship, two of which are from the Southeast region of Minnesota.
The Pat Lund Post Secondary Scholarship was established by the Lund family to celebrate Pat Lund by helping others with dyslexia reach their goals. The Lund family, in partnership with The Reading Center, created the annual scholarship to financially aid dyslexic students with their pursuit of postsecondary education.
Brook Blegan, a senior from Century High school, and Audrey Redalen, a senior from Lanesboro High School, and Anders Baaten of Duluth will be presented with their scholarships by Judge Kevin Lund at The Reading Center Board of Directors Meeting.
Brook is a senior graduate from Century High School who plans to continue her education in Communications and Marketing at Marquette University in Milwaukee Minnesota.
She has been involved in The Reading Center’s programming since she was a kindergartener. As a teen, Brook participated in Study Skills where she learned strategies for academic success.
During her time in high school, Brook participated in cross country and debate, as well as nannying children with autism.
She says her experience with dyslexia taught her the value of hard work in addition to fostering her empathy for others experiencing obstacles.
Audrey will head to Iowa State University to major in Animal Sciences this fall. She is graduating from Lanesboro High School and has taken classes at Rochester Community and Technical College.
Growing up, Audrey was an award-winning participant in 4-H and Future Farmers of America.
She says her sees her dyslexic brain as a strength when judging livestock or problem-solving on the farm.
Anders Baaten, a nurse and health educator teaching at St. Scholastica in Duluth, is the third recipient of the Pat Lund Post Secondary Scholarship.
He also owns Southeast MN Safety Services where he trains people in first aid, lifeguarding and wilderness first aid.
Anders has participated in The Reading Center’s Best of Basics Summer Program and was tested and received tutoring.
He says his experience with dyslexia shows how perseverance and support from others enabled him to overcome obstacles and reach his academic goals.
