A landmark settlement in House vs. NCAA signed by a judge Friday means Maryland athletics will be able to pay its student-athletes directly starting July 1, reversing a decades-long precedent.
The settlement, signed by U.S. Judge Claudia Wilken, allows schools to share up to $20.5 million in revenue with its athletes in the coming year, as well as removing the cap on scholarships for each team; meaning teams can now offer scholarships to every one of their athletes.
“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said in a conference statement.
The settlement is noteworthy for Maryland due to the hire of new athletic director Jim Smith, who enters the job with a bevy of experience in revenue generation at the professional and collegiate sports levels.
