Model High School senior Sara Grace Abernathy has been named a winner of the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic honors awarded to high school seniors across the country.
She was selected from a nationwide pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on their strong academic record, leadership, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Each state’s number of winners is proportional to its share of the nation’s graduating seniors.
“Sara Grace embodies everything we hope for in our students—intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a deep commitment to excellence,” said Model High School Principal Kevin Strickland. “We are incredibly proud of her and excited to see the impact she will make in both the sciences and the arts.”
Sara Grace plans to attend the University of Georgia’s Morehead Honors College, where she will pursue a double major in Biochemistry and Dance.
“I am so excited and honored to receive this scholarship as it will help me further my education and continue my research endeavors at the University of Georgia’s Center for Undergraduate Research,” said Abernathy. “I would not be where I am today without the support of the Model community, who have always challenged me to better myself and others, and I am forever grateful for the impact of this community on my life!”
The entire Model High School community celebrates Sara Grace’s success and will be cheering her on as she takes this exciting next step.
