MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – The Monongalia County Health Department is partnering with the WVU School of Nursing to offer scholarships for six West Virginia nurses who are working in health departments across the state.
They are covering the full cost of tuition of nurses who are attending the Faith Community Nursing program. This funding was provided by the National Association of County and City health Officials.
“The Mon County Health Department received funding through NACCHO, a national organization related to public health, to offer these scholarships,” said Angel Smothers. “So we do the training at the WVU School of Nursing and the Mon County Health Department in conjunction with NACCHO is offering the funding.”
The WVU School of Nursing has been offering the Faith Community Nursing program since 2016.
In this program they are training nurse to work in their faith-based communities to help build nurse led access to health care.
“Connecting community nurses to these faith-based settings is a good way to reach them in their community,” said Angel Smothers.
Part of their goal in this program is to have more partnerships across the state of West Virginia.
“The goal is to help build those partnerships across the State of West Virginia between faith communities, faith community nurses, and health departments,” said Angel Smothers. “We are hoping to see more of this as an early step in this collaboration.”
