The Montgomery College Foundation has launched its largest-ever fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $50 million to support scholarships, resources, and transformative opportunities for students and the Montgomery County community, with the campaign kickoff held at the newly dedicated Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building.

The Montgomery College Foundation launched its largest fundraising campaign in the College’s history, aiming to raise $50 million to transform student lives and impact the Montgomery County community. The campaign was announced at a kickoff event October 30 in the newly dedicated Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building on Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. The Leggetts are the chairs of the fundraising campaign and attended the kickoff.
The event brought together supporters, alumni, and community leaders, and featured remarks from Montgomery College President Jermaine F. Williams and Mary Pat Alcus, chair of the Montgomery College Foundation board of directors.
“Passion is at the core of the new campaign we are launching today. Giving each one of our students the chance to discover their passion and unlock their potential,” Williams said. “It is also about dignity: building a world in which each person’s dignity is valued because of their role in our community. We each have something unique to give, if given the right opportunity at the right moment. We are embarking on the public phase of the most ambitious and impactful fundraising campaign in our College’s history. The funds raised will catalyze the ambitions of individuals and families for a lifetime, and those of our community, for generations to come.”
Referencing her background in the investments industry and the principles of choosing projects that foster long-term growth, Alcus said, “I believe these principles align with the investments we make in our community and its future through our support of Montgomery College and the students we serve.”
Alcus, the chair of the Montgomery College Foundation’s board of directors, recently announced a generous gift with her husband, Darren Alcus. The Alcus Family Endowed Athletic Scholarship is the College’s first endowed scholarship for student-athletes.
“Each student who graduates and enters the workforce helps build economic activity, and, very importantly, enhances community well-being… thus, each scholarship established at Montgomery College creates a pathway to a new opportunity,” Mary Pat said. “The mutual bond between the College and the community is also visible in data and results. With 79% of Montgomery College graduates choosing to remain in Montgomery County, we know their expertise and ambition strengthens our local economy.”
The Montgomery College Foundation is dedicated to addressing the critical needs of students, including scholarships, technology, and essential resources such as food. In the 2021 fiscal year alone, the Foundation provided record-breaking financial support, making an average scholarship award of $1,200 to help students thrive, and the needs and the support provided by the MC Foundation is ongoing.
This campaign underscores Montgomery College’s commitment to transforming students’ lives by empowering all who seek higher education. Every gift supports the Foundation’s mission to build community and create opportunities that resonate beyond the classroom.
