Gabe Muro, a Morenci native, has been named a 2024 Presidential Scholar at Eastern Michigan University, according to a news release.
The EMU Presidential Scholarship is the university’s most prestigious award, valued at up to $100,000. It covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for four years. The scholarship is awarded to top-performing first-year students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and a strong commitment to their communities.
“This scholarship is an incredible gift allowing me to pursue my career dreams without the financial burden of the typical college experience,” Muro said in the release. “It has connected me with a surfeit of helpful resources through the wisdom of other Presidential Scholars and The Honors College itself.”
Muro graduated from Morenci Area High School and is working toward a degree in aviation flight technology to become a commercial pilot. In high school, Muro was a member of the National Honors Society, the Green Earth Club, the Art Club and the Volunteer Club. He also participated in Skills USA, where his school’s two teams placed second and fourth in the quiz bowl. Muro is dedicated to learning more about aviation and gaining more knowledge through internships.
In addition to those extracurriculars, Muro also attended the Culinary Arts program at the Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center.
“My experience at the Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center was nothing short of phenomenal,” Muro said in the release. “The Culinary Arts program taught me numerous practical skills that I will use for the rest of my life, and as a whole provided me with connections and resources that I still use today.”
According to the release, Presidential Scholars are active and engaged members of The Honors College at EMU, complementing their academic college experience with further opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement and leadership.
“We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU and the Honors College this fall,” Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College, said in the release. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures and countries, but they all share a passion for learning, service and leadership, and they have all pledged to give back to EMU through their work in the classroom, student organizations and campus offices.”
The EMU Presidential Scholarship aligns with the university’s commitment to promoting student success and engagement, enabling students to achieve their academic goals while positively impacting the world.
Qualified students can apply for the Presidential Scholarship during their senior year of high school. For more information about the Presidential Scholarship, go to emich.edu.
