Jesse R. Moreno Sr., Norma Moreno, Tony Moreno, Gabriela Perez Flores, Kianna Lara, Elaine Lara, Ana Maria Aquillon, Andrea Perez, Ashley Chapa, Desiree Vera, Nora Gonzalez, and Raul Gonzalez.
The family of the late Jesse T. Moreno Jr. presented the annual Jesse T. Moreno Jr. Memorial Scholarship on Aug. 18 to five first-year students in Southwest Texas College’s registered nursing program in Uvalde.
This year’s $500 scholarship recipients are Ana Maria Aquillon, Kianna Lara, Elaine Lara, Desiree Vera, and Ashley Chapa.
The scholarship honors Moreno, the son of Jesse Moreno Sr. and the late Andrea (Torres) Moreno.
Moreno graduated from Uvalde High School in 1976, earned an associate degree from Southwest Texas College in 1978, and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing in San Antonio in 1981.
Moreno began his career at Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio and later moved to New York, where he married Loretta Donnelly and welcomed their first son, Christopher Jesus Moreno. In 1991, he returned to Texas and joined the Kerrville VA Hospital, where he worked for 22 years. During that time he and his wife celebrated the birth of their second son, Eric Elisandro Moreno.
He died Jan. 27, 2014, at age 56, after a 16-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Moreno is remembered not only for his professional success, but also for his love of running, camping, fishing, hunting, and spending time with friends and family– especially his sons.
The Moreno family funds the scholarship through an annual yard sale. This year’s event will take place Sept. 13 at 8 a.m. at 328 Pecan St. in Uvalde. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund.
Prospective shoppers are asked to park in the alleyway.
Community members who want to contribute items for the sale may contact Moreno’s sister, Nora Gonzalez, at norag8085@gmail.com .
