Morgan’s Mission continues to educate the community regarding the dangers of fentanyl and other drugs. The program was founded to honor Morgan Lewis, who died from an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022 at the age of 23.
Part of the educational effort today comes in the form of scholarships to high schools students. Applicants complete an essay on how drugs have impacted their lives, or how they can assist in combating the drug epidemic.
Four Bullitt County high school students were the recipients of the 2025 Morgan’s Mission Scholarships. They include: Abby Graham, Bullitt Central; Grace Willis, Bullitt East; Lilly Allen, North Bullitt; Nathan Young, Bullitt County Area Technology Center.
Graham, Willis and Allen received $1,500 toward their college funding. Young received $1,250 toward tools needed for his future career.
In its third year, Morgan’s mother, Laura Thurman, said an estimated $18,000 in scholarship finding has been awarded to area students in her daughter’s memory.
Morgan’s Mission continues to spread awareness, as well as keeping Morgan’s story alive, through various community and fundraising events. Program members visit with the parents of others who have lost a child to a drug overdose to grieve alongside them and offer consolation.
“We also support and provide cheer to those in recovery,” Thurman said. “Even though Morgan is not here, they are.”
