STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State senior Surabhi Gupta is the university’s latest recipient of Germany’s most prestigious international graduate scholarship.
Gupta, a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture major from Jaipur, India, will receive up to $32,000 from the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, or DAAD, the German academic exchange service, to continue her studies and research in Germany for up to two years.
In 2024, Gupta spent the summer in Germany with the DAAD-Research Internships in Science and Engineering, exploring the city of Kiel and studying in the university’s landscape ecology department. With the DAAD graduate scholarship, Gupta plans to study biological oceanography at the University of Kiel’s GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research. She said the program aligns with her research interest in computational marine ecology.
Gupta, a Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College student and who has been on the President’s List each semester, credits MSU, the university’s Office of Prestigious External Scholarships, its faculty and her research advisor Adam Skarke, associate professor of geology, for educational opportunities, mentorship and providing a holistic approach to her undergraduate education.
“All the professors I have had at MSU have been amazing teachers and super helpful, especially when it was difficult to navigate things as an international student here,” she said. “The honors college has made my college experience significantly more fulfilling and rewarding because it has been a gateway to numerous academic opportunities since the beginning.”
David Hoffman, director of OPES, said Gupta’s sustained engagement with research, academics and MSU campus organizations were critical in crafting her successful application.
