• Mission: The mission of MVLA Scholars is to help local, low-income, first-generation students achieve their dreams of earning college degrees and attaining professional positions. The process starts in the high school classroom and goes through college graduation and beyond.
MVLA Scholars guides approximately 150 local high school juniors and seniors through the college, financial aid and scholarship application processes as well as the college selection process. Each year the group awards approximately 150 scholarships in amounts ranging from $2,000 to $8,000. Scholars receive scholarship funds every year that they are in college. MVLA Scholars provides one-on-one college mentoring, helping students with academic concerns, setting budgets, time management and general support and encouragement. Career support services include assistance with resumes and cover letters and help finding internships and full-time professional positions. MVLA Scholars awards additional scholarship funds to enable students to take unpaid or low-paying internships in their field of study.
This multi-dimensional approach has proven its success with a graduation rate of more than 90% – compared to national averages of 60% for the same demographic.
• 2024 Update: Each March MVLA Scholars employs a rigorous selection process to identify a new class of college scholars. Important criteria are financial need (average family income is below $55,000) and first-generation to college, as well as academic achievement, the ability to overcome obstacles and a strong desire to work for success. They are supporting 143 scholars this year.
MVLA Scholars has funded more than 170 unpaid internships, including the following from last summer: Cesar interned for The Festival of Lights Parade; Karen interned for Arts Los Altos; Steven interned at Stanford School of Medicine; Royce interned at Scripps Research; Kristin interned at the Santa Clara County Superior Court.
• Why the Holiday Fund is needed: A college education is crucial to help the low-income students in our community attain their goals of rising out of poverty. The cost of college has continued to rise and yet the average earnings of MVLA Scholars’ students and their families is less than $55,000. This is barely enough to live on in the Bay Area, and certainly not enough to pay for college expenses.
So the need is greater than ever before – for both college scholarships and summer internships. Since they are 100% volunteer, funds go directly to college scholarships.
