The National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a scholarship program sponsored by the central government. It falls under the supervision of the Department of School Education & Literacy, which is part of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India. NMMS aims to provide financial assistance to talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, encouraging them to continue their education beyond the elementary level. The scholarship provides an annual financial aid of Rs 12000 to each selected student. The program allocates scholarships to nearly 100,000 deserving learners.
The NMMS will be granted annually to regular students entering into the 9th class in government-supported, local body schools. Consequently, the award duration extends up to four years at most. Students enrolled in “Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas” do not qualify for this award program. Likewise, students attending residential schools operated by state or central government agencies, which provide comprehensive amenities like accommodation, meals, and education, along with those enrolled in private institutions, are ineligible for this scheme. This article provides complete details, including the NMMS Scholarship Application Form.

Students are chosen for the scholarship awards through a test administered by State Governments. States/UTs conduct this test to select students for nomination to the national level (second stage) exam managed by the NCERT. This identical test will serve as the basis for determining the recipients of the Means-cum-Merit Scholarships within each State/UT.
For the NMMS Application submission, students are required to affix several documents. Each document must be certified by the school’s principal and the student’s guardians. Review the essential documents needed to be included with the NMMS registration form:
Apply through Online Mode: Students can submit their applications for the NMMS online via the National Scholarship Portal. Schools notify students about when the NMMS application forms become available. Alternatively, students can obtain the completed form directly from the official website or retrieve it from their schools.
Apply through Offline Mode: For those opting for the offline method, the completed NMMS Application form and the required documents must be handed in at the student’s current school. Once the applications are approved, students will be eligible to pick up their admit cards from their schools shortly before the examination date.
Application Form: The NMMS Application form is accessible online. Students must submit two signed copies of the application form and the necessary documents to their school. The school head is then responsible for sending these applications to the designated nodal schools while keeping a copy for the school’s records.
