The National Merit Scholarship Competition has announced its latest round of college-sponsored merit scholarships of over 3,600 winners on Wednesday, 11 of which come from Tallahassee.
Students across the nation sat to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in 2022, an initial screening test for the competition.
Students who passed the exam were given the opportunity to apply for the competition with a detailed application including an outstanding academic record, extracurriculars, a recommendation by a high school official, a qualifying SAT or ACT score, and an essay.
Now high school graduates, the students will receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at one of 149 associated sponsor colleges and universities.
“For these students to become National Merit Scholars is testament to their commitment to their studies from their supportive teachers in high, middle and elementary school along with their supportive parents and community,” said Joe Burgess, principal of Lawton Chiles High School. “I’m proud of these scholars and look forward to their next set of achievements and accomplishments.”
