The Navidad Valley CattleWomen (NVCW) is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry. One way CattleWomen do this is by providing quality information on the beef industry to the general public, particularly how to consumers on how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet.
Another priority is supporting local youth with an interest in agriculture with scholarships to pursue their postsecondary goals. These scholarships are possible due to the generous support of private donors, corporate sponsors, and events such as the NVCW Ranch Run that occurs every summer in conjunction with the Schulenburg Festival.
Since they awarded their first scholarship in 2005, Navidad Valley CattleWomen have awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to students from Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca counties.
NVCW recently awarded three collegiate scholarships totaling $3,000. Blane Warnken is a graduate of Schulenburg High School and is currently a junior at Texas A&M University studying Animal Science/Production.
Warnken is a member of the TAMU Livestock Judging Team and is active in many student organizations relating to agriculture. He is directly involved in his family’s beef cattle operation and continues to advocate for the industry he was raised in and is so proud of.
Hunter Nevlud is a graduate of Shiner High School and is also a junior at Texas A&M University studying Animal Science. His goal is to learn about meat production, animal reproduction, sausage making and entrepreneurship so that he can work to grow his family’s business, Maeker’s Sausage and Processing.
Lastly, Alyssa Otto is a student at Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine. As a graduate of Schulenburg High School, she plans to practice in a rural clinic and support her clients’ improving management practices, protocols, and intentions of the livestock operations that feed our world.
Alyssa was active as an Aggie CattleWoman, and intends to continue her involvement after she graduates in the local CattleWomen chapter as she works with her family’s cow-calf operation and incorporates reproductive technologies and genetics into improving her own herd.
CattleWomen are presently accepting scholarship applications from graduating high school seniors to be awarded this spring. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, March 7.
