The North Eastern Council (NEC) Merit Scholarship Scheme, fully funded by the Central Government, is meticulously executed by the Ministry of Development for the North Eastern Region. This exclusive initiative targets students from India’s North-Eastern states, commonly called the Seven Sister States, aiming to underwrite their pursuit of higher education. Unlike recurring scholarships, this financial aid is awarded only once annually through a merit-based selection process, underlining the importance of academic excellence. Applicants are required to submit their Aadhar details during the application phase. However, it’s important to note that discontinuing the pursued course disqualifies a student from receiving further assistance under this program.
A total of 1600 scholarships are on offer, intended to support students during the first year of their academic journey. The selection outcomes for successful candidates are disclosed on the official North Eastern Council website, facilitating direct bank transfers for the scholarship disbursements—eliminating the need for intermediaries.
When a student fails to advance to the subsequent academic year, the scholarship is immediately revoked, emphasizing the necessity of educational progression. Renewal applications must accompany the latest promotion certificate, ensuring continuity for students engaged in integrated courses over their entire study period. M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars are eligible for two and three years of financial support, respectively. It’s paramount for applicants not to be recipients of any other form of scholarship or financial aid. The application process is simplified via digital means through the National Scholarship Portal App or the UMANG App, with no reservations applied to the selection criteria.
