A Fauquier County student is among 12 high school seniors awarded a $1,500 college scholarship from Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, commonly called NOVEC, this year.
Lula McCain, a graduate of Kettle Run High School, will attend James Madison University this fall. She was selected by an independent panel based on academic achievement, community service, leadership and letters of recommendation, according to a news release from NOVEC.
The nonprofit electric cooperative awards annual scholarships to students across its service area, which includes Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford and Clarke counties, as well as the city of Manassas Park and the town of Clifton.
Jordan Fischer, a graduate of Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School in Prince William County, was named the most outstanding applicant and received an additional $3,500 as the recipient of the J. Manley Garber Scholarship. Fischer will attend Spelman College in Atlanta and was also awarded the scholarship designated for a student attending a Historically Black College or University.
TJ Brescia, of Westfield High School in Fairfax County, received a scholarship reserved for the child of a NOVEC employee. Brescia recently completed a two-week job shadowing experience with the cooperative’s communications department.

In addition, five students in NOVEC’s service area were among 33 statewide recipients of the Worth Hudson Scholarships awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives. These included:
NOVEC serves more than 180,000 customers and is headquartered in Manassas.
